Keeping it simple without all the technical details, the Gristleizer in its essence is a low frequency oscillator with different waveshape options that interacts with a tremolo (VCA) or Bandpass Filter (VCF). There is a lot of versatility in this circuit which can get all kinds of tones, tremolo, auto-wah, pseudo ring modulator and all kinds of quirky in between 'broken' sounding modulation.
Controls;
Bias - LFO voltage Bias for making the LFO oscillate properly, can be adjusted to taste but typically is set for the strongest sounding oscillation
Depth - sets the amount of oscillator you want to blend into the dry signal
Gain - Determine how much overdrive you want in the circuit, an added feature that the original designer Roy Gwinn gave me some tips on. A little goes a long way as you can hear in the demo.
Level - sets the output volume
Speed - how fast or slow the oscillator wave moves
Waveshape -Square Wave, Triangle, ramp up sawtooth, ramp down sawtooth
VCA - Voltage Controlled Amplifier (Tremolo)
VCF - Voltage Controlled Filter (Bandpass Filter)
This pedal also doubles as a signal buffer. A Klon style buffered bypass was added to squash the oscillation feedback that happens with true bypass high gain pedals and also adds signal integrity to a signal chain.
*Note* This pedal runs on a standard 9 Volt centre negative power supply which is not provided, for suggestions on power supplies see the info section.
If you want to read all the technical jargon, the original article by the designer Roy Gwinn printed in practical electronics. Also Chris Carter's website has all kinds of info about this circuit.
